Open letter on the blockage of the Lankanewsweb.today\u2019s website in Sri Lanka<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. We are deeply concerned by the recent press freedom restrictions imposed by the Sri Lankan government. We would like to call your attention in particular ban imposed on the Lankanewsweb.today an on-line newspaper, and other news websites that are being blocked in Sri Lanka. We believe these actions represent a serious violation of people\u2019s right to access a broad range of information and opinions.<\/p>\n

2. A strong democracy requires both tolerance and transparency in order to thrive, but this decision by the Srilankan government to intimidate and smother voices opposed to the government. This development is a clear threat to the democratic principles and good governance claims to hold.
\n3. The website of the Lankanewsweb.today, is frequently targeted by the authorities in Sri Lanka and has been periodically blocked in the country since 2015, most recently starting in 11 Sep 2016.<\/p>\n

4. The Lankanewsweb.today is an entirely volunteer-based news website covering Sri Lankan matters and aims to re-enforce free and independent media in the country. With more than two million page views per month, The news website covers mostly issues which are underreported within the country.<\/p>\n

5. We firmly believe that allowing people unfettered access to information and opinions would not only show Sri Lanka\u2019s commitment to human rights, but would also represent an important step in Sri Lanka\u2019s much-needed reconciliation process and its international commitments to press freedom.<\/p>\n

6. Further it is undisputed fact that Ranil \u2013 Sirisena ally attempts to silence the opposition. These ploys nothing but have had a chilling effect on freedom, democracy, and good governance.<\/p>\n

7. We strongly urge you to reach out to President Sirisena and his administration to encourage a peaceful and appropriate resolution to these cases. A free media must be supported and protected to foster an environment open to constructive political discussion and to ensure freedom of expression for all the Srilankan people.
